Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of loneliness and stress-coping behaviors as perceived by children on their internet game addiction. The subjects of this research exercise consisted of 489 students from 4 elementary schools. Data were analyzed by means of simple- and multi-regression analysis. When the boys experience higher levels of loneliness, the degree of problematic internet game use is higher. When the girls experience higher levels of loneliness, the degree of its all sub-factors of internet game addiction is higher. When the boys experience higher active stress-coping behaviors, the degree of problematic internet game use and internet game use is lower. When the boys experience higher passive/avoidance and aggressive coping behaviors, the degrees of its all sub-factors of internet game addiction is higher. When the girls experience higher active stress-coping behaviors, the degree of problematic internet game use is lower. The girls, who exhibited higher aggressive coping behaviors, also exhibited higher degrees across all sub-factors of internet game addiction-including a higher rate of internet game addiction as well. These results can help to prevent internet game addiction among elementary school children by better understanding the variables which have an effect on it. In addition, a program to decrease loneliness and training in positive stress-coping strategies should be developed and implemented.
